A longtime employee has taken ownership of a well-known Lancaster sports bar

GUTTENBERG, Iowa — A new Clayton County diner has opened along the Mississippi River with a focus on classic, homestyle comfort food.

Driftwood Diner recently opened at 531 S. River Park Drive in Guttenberg. The locally owned diner offers a variety of hearty Midwestern favorites such as casseroles, tenderloin and burgers, in addition to all-day breakfast offerings and various baked goods.

Renovations at old Cascade brewery uncover beer cave lost to time

CASCADE, Iowa — A historic beer cave has been unearthed from its sandy slumbers underneath the old Frank L. May Brewery. Originally built in the 1870s by German stone masons and owned by German immigrant Frank May, the brewery manufactured around 2,500 barrels of beer a year and was reportedly one of the most extensive inland breweries in the U.S.

After the original brewery closed, the building served several functions over the years, most recently home to the Cascade Food Pantry, and is currently undergoing renovation after purchase by Brian Bock, of Iowa Main Street Investments.

Honey Mustard Crunch Salmon

Quick and easy family dinners often feel few and far between, but you can make them a more frequent occurrence by depending on seafood as a flavorful, easy-to-prepare protein.

Today, more than half of all seafood consumed in the U.S. is raised by aquaculture, also known as seafood farming. While this industry has made strides throughout the last few decades, from increasingly sustainable farming practices to technological advancements, not all seafood farms are equal and neither are the certifications you see on the packaging.

Aquaculture helps meet the ever-growing popularity of seafood and provides people in developing countries with healthy protein. It also aids in rebuilding populations of threatened and endangered species along with boosting wild stocks of freshwater and seawater species. By ensuring supply chain integrity from farm to the store, the Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s (ASC) Sea Green certification label lets shoppers know they’re protecting oceans, coasts and wildlife while also investing in restoring them.
